Why (Causes):
The Triple Entente (Great Britain, France, and Russia), the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy), Belgium, and the United States
When: July 28, 1914- November 11, 1918
Where: There were battles in places such as France (The Battle of Marne, Ypres, Verdun, Somme), Germany (The Battle of Tannenberg), and the Ottoman Empire (The Battle of Gallipoli)
Why (Causes):
- Militarism (using force or the threat of force against another nation): Nations felt threatened and began strengthening
- Alliances (unions formed between countries for mutual benefit) If one country were to be attacked, allied countries would be obligated to join in the fight as well. This led to all the allied countries fighting one another.
- Imperialism (the spread of political/economic control of one country over another) Countries were being invaded for their resources causing them to want to go to war with those countries. Serbia was being imperialized by Austria-Hungary and this led to the assassination of the archduke of Austria.
- Nationalism (extreme love and devotion for one's country): The people of the countries believed their country was more superior to other countries and wanted to dominate them
- The war ignited when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb national
- Germany beginning submarine warfare
- The sinking of the Lusitania on May 7, 1915
- The publication of the Zimmerman Note which asked for an alliance against the U.S. (sent from Germany to Mexico and published on March 1, 1917)
